Reefscapers – Reef Regeneration Experts

In 2025, Patina Maldives partnered with Reefscapers to develop and expand coral propagation and reef restoration efforts.

Reefscapers, an international team of marine biologists, has been at the forefront of marine environmental projects for over 20 years. Founded in 2001 by husband-and-wife team Thomas and Marie, the organization has grown from its modest beginnings to lead projects throughout the Maldives and internationally. Over the years, Reefscapers has expanded its expertise, bringing together specialists in engineering, data science, aquaculture, and animal husbandry. The organization now delivers tailored solutions in areas such as reef restoration, coastal erosion management, and the development and operation of marine education centers, including the well-known Marine Savers initiative.

Patina Maldives: Marine Conservation & Coral Restoration

Our coral conservation project was started by molding ceramic structures to aid coral growth, providing guests with knowledge and opportunities to experience our coral conservation efforts first-hand. We encourage and inspire the next-gen of travelers, nurturing sustainable values with a range of hands-on educational programs to raise awareness of the local ocean environment.

Our marine biologist, along with guests, teammates and local students have completed over 60 coral frames, 70 ceramic structures, and planted over 3000 coral fragments into the reef. Thanks to our new partnership with Reefscapers in 2025, we hope to expand our marine conservation efforts to create artificial reefs around our islands, promoting coral health and encouraging marine biodiversity.

Coral Rescue Project

Reefscapers worked long days with our dive teams to rescue coral colonies from the government Rasmalé land reclamation project, 40 miles away.

Corals were carefully transported by dhoni (local boat), and relocated to the lagoons around our island. Coral colonies were attached to a series of Pyramid frames, along with massive coral species on the ocean floor.

Reefscapers Coral Frames & Patina Maldives

Here you can see the photographs of our Reefscapers coral frames, located around the islands at Patina Maldives.

Our team inspect and maintain all of our frames, and photograph them bi-annually to monitor the growth of the coral fragments as they grow and mature.

How to view your frame photographs: Enter your name or email address or coral frame tag number into the search box and press ‘Submit’. For example, type a pyramid frame number such as P01 and press submit.
